The Mission Trails Regional Park system encompasses almost 5,800 acres of rugged hills, valleys and open areas. Located just eight miles northeast of downtown, Mission Trails provides a quick, regional escape to San Diego’s natural beauty of yesterday. In 1974, The Mission Trails Regional Park system became one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Originally used by the Kumeyaay, the park is the site of the Old Mission Dam, built to store water for the Mission San Diego de Alcala. Cowles Mountain, part of the Mission Trails, is San Diego’s highest peak and offers a great hike and inspiring views- from the peak.
